How to Use Remove Background from Image

Technical Details

The background removal is powered by a U²-Net (U-square Net) deep learning model, specifically designed for salient object detection. Unlike general-purpose segmentation models, U²-Net has a nested U-structure that captures fine details at multiple scales, making it particularly effective at handling hair, fur, and semi-transparent edges.

The model processes images at their native resolution up to 1024×1024 pixels. Larger images are automatically downscaled for processing and the resulting alpha mask is upscaled back to the original dimensions using high-quality interpolation.

Output format is always PNG with an alpha channel (RGBA). The alpha channel contains smooth gradients at the edges rather than hard cutoffs, which produces natural-looking composites when the subject is placed on a new background.

All processing happens on GPU-accelerated infrastructure via Hugging Face Spaces. Your image is sent to the model for inference, and the result is returned immediately. Images are not stored, logged, or used for any purpose beyond generating your result.
